December 12, 2021ASUS TUF VS ASUS ROG: Which One Should You Choose?

Looking for an ASUS gaming laptop but can’t choose between the ASUS TUF series or the ASUS ROG series? Lucky for you, we have created a simple guide to help you choose between the two.

Difference Between TUF and ROG

Between these two ASUS laptop series, which one do you think is a much better fit for you? Let’s find out!

The TUF (The Ultimate Force) and ROG (Republic of Gamers) are two different laptop series that ASUS created. You can determine the differences between laptops by looking at their build, and more importantly, their CPU and GPU, plus their graphics. These are one of the ways you can see which of the two laptops will fit your standards.

The TUF series can be used for more than just gaming. It can be used for studying and working. It depends on its CPU and GPU since the TUF and ROG series can have a range of CPUs with a high-end CPU like the Ryzen 4800H for a higher price than a Ryzen 3550H CPU for a lower-priced laptop. This goes the same for their GPUs.

One of the most noticeable differences between the two laptops series is their build because they look completely different from each other. Although they both have different designs, both are made out of a metal-plastic chassis. Like most laptops, both of them have a chassis metal while the bottom is made out of durable plastic. Regardless of their builds, both of the models are durable.

While both are great laptop series, the TUF series is much more versatile as compared to the ROG because the TUF series is made to be used not only for gaming but for other tasks. While the ROG series is more concentrated on gaming. Depending on what you are looking for in a laptop, either laptop series are still great as their models can offer a range of prices, CPUs, GPUs, builds, etc.

However, today, we will be comparing the ASUS TUF A15 and ASUS ROG Strix G17. Which one is the one for you?

Build and Design

The build and design are one of the major differences between the two. You’ll notice that the ASUS TUF A15 has a silver-blue color on the lid while the ASUS ROG Strix G17 has a black-gray colored lid. Both of them also have two different designs on their lids as seen in the 1st and 2nd photos below. Even the designs’ placement is different.

The ROG Strix G17 is also significantly larger with 15.55 x 1.08 x 11.1-inch dimensions as compared to the TUF A15 that has ‎10.1 x 14.1 x 1-inch dimensions. With the ROG Strix bigger and made with heavier material, it is also heavier with a weight of 5.95 pounds as opposed to the TUF A15 that only weighs 5.07 pounds.

Display and Screen Resolution

Another core difference between the two laptops is their display and screen resolution. As mentioned, with the two laptops’ product dimensions, the ROG Strix is slightly bigger than the TUF A15. This means that the ROGs’ display is also slightly bigger at 17.3 inches, while the TUF A15 has ‎15.6 inches.

Even though the ROG Strix G17 is bigger than TUF A15, they both have the same screen resolution which is 1920 x 1080 pixels. A screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels is one of the most commonly used resolutions for a laptop. Although a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels is better for a 17. 3-inch laptop, which is the display size of the ROG Strix.

Memory

There aren’t any big differences between the TUF A15 and the ROG Strix G17 in terms of memory. It’s because the TUF A15 has a RAM of 16GB while the ROG Strix G17 has a RAM of 8GB but is upgradeable to 16GB.

Both of them also have a speed of 3200 MHz. The only difference they have is their memory slot and their memory layout. The ASUS TUF A15 has one memory slot while the ASUS ROG Strix has 2. Same as their memory layout, TUF has 1×16 GB and ROG has 2×8 GB.

The TUF A15 would have been a lot better if it had 2 memory slots so that you can upgrade its RAM. So, in terms of upgradeability, the ROG Strix wins with its two memory slots. You can change one of the slots to a better RAM card to get a higher RAM size for more memory.

Storage

Another similarity between TUF’s A15 and ROG’s Strix is that they both have similar storages. TUF has an upgradeable 512 GB-1 TB SSD HDD capacity with a SATA HDD type while ROG Strix has an upgradeable 1 TB SSD HDD capacity and also a SATA HDD type.

Both of them can hold large amounts of data. You’ll for sure won’t run out of storage immediately.  If in any case, you do run out of storage, you can always purchase a separate hard drive to store more data. But for regular users, 1TB of storage is more than enough.

Performance

Performance is one of these two’s differences as they both have different processors and graphics processors, which makes both their performances slightly different.

TUF A15 has a 4.2 GHz Ryzen7-4800H processor while the ROG Strix has a 4.5 GHz Ryzen 9-5900HX processor. So, what are the differences between these two processors? The Ryzen 9-5900HX processor has a higher base frequency and turbo boost frequency compared to the Ryzen 7-4800H, meaning, the  Ryzen 9-5900HX is faster than the Ryzen 7-4800H.

This works great for when you’re a heavy gamer, although, one con about a higher base frequency and turbo boost frequency is that it’ll need more power. The more power it requires, the more heat it’ll generate which can cause overheating. If you’re not a heavy gamer, then you should opt for the Ryzen 7-4800H because basic tasks such as working or studying will not need a high base and turbo boost frequency.

These two laptops also have different graphic processors. TUF with GeForce RTX 2060 and ROG with GeForce RTX 3070. For those seeking a solid 1080p performer, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 is the new go-to graphics card. It can attain adequate results at 1080p and 1440p, and it surpasses the RTX 2060 by a significant margin.

Price

Lastly, TUF A15 and ROG Strix have significant price differences. TUF is priced lower at $1,539.99 while ROG is priced higher at $2,349.00. Both of them have two different price points since ROG is much more updated and new compared to TUF.

Bottomline

Both of the laptops are great. However, it’ll depend on your needs as to which one you should choose.

To decide which one to buy, you must think about where you will be using the laptop. If you’re planning to use it for heavy gaming, then we would recommend that you invest in ROG because it is made to cater to heavy gamers with a bigger screen, faster CPU and GPU, etc. But if you’re planning to use it for mid-heavy gaming, casual use such as work or studying, and if you’re on a tighter budget, then we would recommend that you go for the TUF A15. It’s much cheaper and more versatile.
